not your run-of-the-mill

It is one of these evenings of hanging out and watching movies. I did my share of work and it was time to shut down the computer - at least for a half a day or so - and to change from sitting in the bed to sitting on the mattress in front of the TV (yes, still recuperating).
First movie we watched was the Spanish film Open Your Eyes which is the original to Vanilla Sky. I don’t know about you, but I loved Vanilla Sky and it’s sound track. Watching the original was quite intriguing. I don’t believe one film being significantly stronger than the other, both have some aspects which are superior to the other but overall both are very strong movies. And both play with reality, what is and what is imagination, how much is it you making your own reality and your dreams. Even though the film coats it with ‘future’ and ‘virtual reality’, the essence which you can take out of it is the question if there is a true reality or if reality is only what we say it is.
After this appetizer we switched to the often watched and very much loved movie Practical Magic. This is a wonderful one and if you ever feel the blues and want to do something nice for yourself, rent it and watch it. It is light, sweet, has magic and witches and just a true chick movie - though my husband has sat with me through this one at least already 3 times and thinks “it’s a decent one” too. Great family movie. I also love the power it portraits of women coming together to help a common cause and believer or not, just to “go for it”. And of course, it’s romantic and touching too. If you want to train your esoteric eye, go for it, read up on the frogs and brooms and all of it. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are great sisters next to some other good actors. Kitsch or not, the movie weaves some magic in and around hearts.
It’s the kind of magic that you can also feel when you’ve brought Tarot cards to life.
